Overview
During World War II, IWC was one of twelve manufacturers commissioned by the British Ministry of Defense to produce mil-spec watches for the rigors of field use. Their contribution, the Mark X, featured the hand-wound caliber 83 and established the line’s utilitarian DNA. By 1948, it was replaced by the legendary Mark XI, which introduced defining features such as a triangle lume plot at 12 o’clock, paddle hands, and an anti-magnetic soft iron shield placed between the movement and caseback. This reference served the MoD until the 1980s, when it was finally retired without a direct replacement.
No longer commissioned by the military, IWC sensed an opportunity to offer a pilot's watch to the general public, releasing the Mark XII in 1993 and the slightly larger Mark XV in 1999. While the black dial remained the flagship across both models, IWC produced a much smaller run of Mark XVs featuring a brilliant white “Albino” dial in the early 2000s. This rare variant retained the 38 mm case and the chronometer-grade IWC calibre 37524, but introduced several decorative enhancements — such as polished applied indices and a blued steel seconds hand — offering a dressier alternative to the traditional aviator aesthetic.
While it may never outweigh the historical significance of the Mark XI, the Mark XV has become a cornerstone for collectors as the last traditionally styled pilot's watch. Black dial examples have retained a steady level of popularity over the years and can still be found with relative ease. However, coming across a white dial variant such as this with the original bracelet is exponentially more difficult. For those who appreciate the heritage of the pilot's watch, but prefer a distinctive modern take, this coveted “Albino” Mark XV is a standout choice that should not be missed.
