1990s IWC Der Fliegerchronograph
A Fliegerchronograph with a striking black dial, a satin brushed case, and the Valjoux 7750 automatic movement.
Overview
In 1994, fresh off the success of the Doppelchronograph and the Mark XII, IWC expanded its modern Pilot’s watch line with the introduction of the Fliegerchronograph reference 3706. The new watch marked a mechanical evolution of the previous Mecha-Quartz chronograph, now equipped with a heavily modified Valjoux 7750 movement that was finished and regulated in-house. The external design retained the same utilitarian DNA as IWC’s other Pilot’s watches—stark white Arabic numerals and baton hands set against a matte black dial for ultimate legibility.
This particular example gains a splash of color—and a bit of charm we might add—from the naturally aged tritium across the dial and hands. It also sports a robustly engineered 5-piece bracelet with a unique adjustment system that leverages two pusher tools to release the link pins, both of which are included. The whole package, from fit to finish, is masterfully executed and a testament to the high level of craftsmanship that IWC’s watchmakers were able to achieve during this era.

Condition
Case: The satin brushed case shows very light wear, including a couple hairlines, tiny nicks, and faint scuffs. The overall impression is clean. The lugs are nice and thick with excellent definition at the edges and chamfers still present. The polished top portion of the bezel remains crisp at the edges with a few minor hairlines and tiny nicks. The caseback shows light signs of wear throughout and retains excellent definition between brushed and polished surfaces. The model and serial number engravings remain crisp and deep.
Dial, Hands, & Crystal: The matte black dial and polished hands are in pristine condition. The tritium across the dial and hands remains intact and has aged to an even shade of yellow. Both exhibit no lasting glow when exposed to UV light. The sapphire crystal is squeaky clean and scratch-free.
Bracelet/Strap: The IWC stainless steel bracelet is in fantastic overall condition with virtually no stretch and hardly any marks outside of a couple faint hairlines and tiny scuffs. The clasp shows a couple very faint desk-diving marks. The logo engraving remains sharp and detailed.
