2003 Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Ultra Thin
A Master Control with a charming silver dial, an incredibly slim case, and the JLC 849 hand-wound movement.
Overview
In 1992, Jaeger-LeCoultre debuted the vintage-inspired Master Control collection as a tribute to the brand’s unmatched watchmaking heritage. No longer just “the watchmaker’s watchmaker,” the Master Control collection ushered in a new era where JLC was once again dedicated to exceptional watchmaking and production under its own name. Throughout the years, the collection has featured a number of horology’s most famous complications, including the moonphase indicator, triple calendar, chronograph, world timer, 8-day power reserve, and perpetual calendar. What’s more, each Master Control watch has undergone the brand’s strict “1,000 Hour Control” testing period, during which the movement is cased, rigorously examined beyond COSC certification protocols, and hand-adjusted for accuracy in six positions.
The watch offered here may be simple in appearance, but it's no less masterfully executed, defined by a profile so slender it practically melts into the wrist. Measuring a remarkable 5.2mm thin, the 145.8.79 houses the hand-wound calibre 849—a movement widely regarded as one of the finest ultra-thin calibres ever produced by Jaeger-LeCoultre. Unlike many of its competitors, the 849 was engineered to withstand “plate flex” and was incredibly reliable, making it the undisputed champion of its era for daily wear.
While its technical prowess is hidden behind a solid caseback—consistent with the classic golden age of thin watchmaking—the real magic lies in its presence on the arm. The silver sunray dial is a study in perfect symmetry, featuring crisp dauphine hands and dart indices that eschew the clutter of a date window for a pure, mid-century aesthetic. With its streamlined 34mm proportions and quintessential dress watch DNA, this Ultra Thin remains one of the most comfortable and effortless watches ever made.
