2001 Rolex Air-King
An Air-King with a black sunray dial, an oyster bracelet, and the Rolex 3000 automatic movement.
Overview
One of Rolex's oldest models still in production today, the Air-King was first introduced in 1945 by Hans Wilsdorf to honor the Royal Air Force pilots who fought during World War II. While launched as part of a larger series of “Air” models that included the Air-Lion, Air-Giant, and Air-Tiger, the Air-King was the only variant to survive, becoming a permanent fixture within the Rolex catalogue in 1957 under the reference 5500. For three decades, the ref. 5500 Air-King served as the quintessential entry point into Rolex, characterized by a 34mm Oyster case, a time-only dial, and non-chronometer "Precision" movements.
In 1989, Rolex finally modernized the Air-King line with the release of the 140XX family, which kept the beloved vintage proportions intact while introducing contemporary upgrades, including a sapphire crystal and the high-beat Caliber 3000 movement. Among the references produced were the smooth-bezel 14000 and the engine-turned bezel 14010, both of which later received an “M” (“modified”) suffix once Rolex transitioned to the updated Caliber 3130. Across these core references, Rolex explored an array of dial designs, ranging from classic silver and black with baton markers to white dials with Roman numerals and sporty 3-6-9 Explorer-styles in salmon and blue.
The example offered here features a sleek black dial, widely considered to be one of the most versatile iterations in the 14000 family. The deep sunray finish creates a sharp backdrop for the polished hour markers, matching hands, and sporty half-second track, capturing the perfect middle ground between dress and utility. Despite its vintage-leaning 34mm diameter, the watch has plenty of wrist presence thanks to its robust case and long lugs. Paired with a smooth bezel and stainless steel Oyster bracelet, this classic Air-King design makes for a great daily driver and remains one of the most accessible neo-vintage Rolex watches.
