2000 Rolex Air-King
An Air-King with a blue sunray dial, an oyster bracelet, and the Rolex 3000 automatic movement.
Overview
One of Rolex's oldest models still in production today, the Air-King was first introduced in 1945 by Hans Wilsdorf to honor the Royal Air Force pilots who fought during World War II. While launched as part of a larger series of “Air” models that included the Air-Lion, Air-Giant, and Air-Tiger, the Air-King was the only variant to survive, becoming a permanent fixture within the Rolex catalogue in 1957 under the reference 5500. For three decades, the ref. 5500 Air-King served as the quintessential entry point into Rolex, characterized by a 34mm Oyster case, a time-only dial, and non-chronometer "Precision" movements.
In 1989, Rolex finally modernized the Air-King line with the release of the 140XX family, which kept the beloved vintage proportions intact while introducing contemporary upgrades, including a sapphire crystal and the high-beat Caliber 3000 movement. Among the references produced were the smooth-bezel 14000 and the engine-turned bezel 14010, both of which later received an “M” (“modified”) suffix once Rolex transitioned to the updated Caliber 3130. Across these core references, Rolex explored an array of dial designs, ranging from classic silver and black with baton markers to white dials with Roman numerals and sporty 3-6-9 Explorer-styles in salmon and blue.
The example offered here features a gorgeous blue dial and classic baton markers — the ideal configuration for those seeking a refined pop of color. Accented with matching hands and a sporty half-second track, it strikes the perfect balance between dress and utility. Despite its vintage-leaning 34mm diameter, the case delivers plenty of wrist presence thanks to its robust construction and elongated lugs. Finished with a smooth bezel and stainless steel Oyster bracelet, this compelling Air-King design makes for a great daily driver and remains one of the most accessible entry points into neo-vintage Rolex.

Condition
Case: The stainless steel case shows normal wear in the form of a few light scratches, small scuffs, and tiny nicks throughout. The lugs are nice and thick with excellent definition at the edges. The condition of the caseback is consistent with the rest of the case. The center portion retains the original Rolex sticker. The backs of the lugs show signs of prior bracelet removal. The model and serial engravings between the lugs are sharp and legible.
Dial, Hands, & Crystal: The blue sunray dial and polished hands are in fantastic condition with no notable imperfections and fully functioning Super-LumiNova. The sapphire crystal has a tiny scratch above the 2 o’clock marker, but otherwise remains clean.
Bracelet/Strap: The Rolex stainless steel bracelet is in good overall condition with minimal-to-light stretch. There are a few hairlines and faint scuffs throughout, the most prominent of which are desk-diving marks on the clasp. The clasp itself opens and closes securely. The raised Rolex logo remains well-defined.
