2023 Vacheron Constantin Overseas

My journey to the Vacheron Constantin Overseas 4600V came from a desire to find a true go anywhere, do anything (GADA) watch. Previously, that role was filled by both a first-generation midsize Overseas and a Tudor Date+Day. While the Overseas had the case shape I loved, the Tudor’s blue dial was simply more versatile for everyday wear. Furthermore, given that both were older pieces, I didn't always trust them against modern wear and tear. The 4600V offered the perfect solution: the robust build quality of a modern piece, a highly versatile blue dial, and a level of execution that genuinely elevated the best parts of both previous watches.

I’ve had a few people ask why I didn’t opt for the larger 41mm reference 4520V. Simply put, the “standard” modern size is far too big for my wrist, and yes, I’ve tried it on. Even if they came out with a 38mm version, that would still be too big. The 34.5mm size is perfect for me, and even benefits from a 1.5mm reduction in case height. Sure, it has a smaller movement and lacks a Geneva seal, but neither of those are impactful to me given I only look at the dial when wearing the watch. At the end of the day, the caliber 1088/1 is still a highly accurate in-house movement with a 22K gold rotor. Plus, and perhaps more importantly, there’s no sacrifice in water resistance with the smaller case.

Going all in on modern with the Vacheron Overseas 4600V has turned out to be a fantastic choice. It’s similar in size to the first-generation midsize that I previously owned, but everything about this iteration feels much more refined. The lacquered blue dial is dynamic and extremely legible, and the bracelet design is absolute perfection, down to the handy micro-extension at the clasp. The addition of the 4600V to my collection marks a rare "1 in, 2 out" that proves just how right Vacheron got this reference.
