Overview

In 1775, after years of studying watchmaking and mathematics, Abraham-Louis Breguet established his workshop on the Île de la Cité in Paris. Dedicated to horological innovation, Breguet invented the first automatic watch in 1780, patented the tourbillon in 1801, produced the first wristwatch in 1810, and laid the groundwork for the modern chronograph in 1820. Over a century after his death, his eponymous brand was waning under questionable leadership and the effects of the Quartz Crisis. It took another prominent figure in watchmaking—Daniel Roth—to restore the brand to its former glory.

Hired by the Chaumet brothers in 1975, Roth spent his early years studying Breguet’s historic designs before translating them into wristwatch form alongside master watchmaker Louis-Maurice Caillet. The pair preserved Breguet’s aesthetic language, decorating their watches with engine-turned dials, circular-grained chapter rings, painted Roman numerals, and blued pomme évidée hands. Roth’s fourteen-year tenure at Breguet ended in 1988 when the Chaumet brothers declared bankruptcy, but his vision for the brand endured.

Building on Roth’s foundation, the Classique reference 3290 offered here emerged in the late 1980s as a continuation of this revived heritage, distilling the maison’s signature aesthetic into a compact, time-only format. The series was rendered across yellow, white, and rose gold cases, with a few rare configurations sprinkled in, including one with tilted Roman numerals and another with a white porcelain dial and raised Breguet numerals. Produced in small quantities throughout the 1990s before being phased out in favor of the larger 3910 and 5907 references, the 3290 remains relatively scarce today, standing as an understated gem from Breguet’s neo-vintage renaissance.
