1990s Breguet Classique Day Date Moonphase

In 1775, after years of studying watchmaking and mathematics, Abraham-Louis Breguet established his workshop on the Île de la Cité in Paris. Dedicated to horological innovation, Breguet invented the first automatic watch in 1780, patented the tourbillon in 1801, produced the first wristwatch in 1810, and laid the groundwork for the modern chronograph in 1820. Over a century after his death, his eponymous brand was waning under questionable leadership and the effects of the Quartz Crisis. It took another prominent figure in watchmaking—Daniel Roth—to restore the brand to its former glory.

Hired by the Chaumet brothers in 1975, Roth spent his early years studying Breguet’s historic designs before translating them into wristwatch form alongside master watchmaker Louis-Maurice Caillet. The pair preserved Breguet’s aesthetic language, decorating their watches with engine-turned dials, circular-grained chapter rings, painted Roman numerals, and blued pomme évidée hands. Roth’s fourteen-year tenure at Breguet ended in 1988 when the Chaumet brothers declared bankruptcy, but his vision for the brand endured.

Among the most cherished pieces developed during Roth’s tenure was the reference 3330, modeled after Breguet’s 19th-century N°4579 pocket watch. Its unique composition relies as much on negative space as it does on telling the time. The silvered 18k gold dial features an offset time display with Breguet’s signature hands, balanced by a moonphase indicator at 12 o’clock and recessed gold day and date discs below—all set against a vast Clous de Paris guilloché pattern. While yellow gold was standard case material for this reference, the 3330BB offered here was executed in 18k white gold and produced in far smaller numbers. Understated and monochromatic, this preferred variant provides a quiet backdrop that lets the dial’s decorative elements truly shine.
