Overview

In 1996, Vacheron Constantin, fresh off its acquisition by the Vendôme Luxury group, re-entered the integrated bracelet category with the introduction of the Overseas. Designers Dino Modolo and Vincent Kaufmann focused their efforts on creating a travel-ready watch that was inspired by the legendary 222, yet distinctively different. The new Overseas sported the usual barrel-shaped case, but was now fitted with a three-piece bracelet, crown guards, and a polished bezel that was a direct nod to the brand’s Maltese cross logo.

During its production from 1996 to 2004, the first generation Overseas was offered in a 37mm “jumbo” size, a 35mm mid size, and a 24mm ladies size, each with five different dial colors — white, black, blue, gray, and rarest of all, salmon. In addition, the watch came powered by either the automatic caliber 1310/1311 or quartz caliber 1320. Both were COSC certified movements, with the automatic calibers based on the Girard Perregaux 3100 featuring a gold rotor. Towards the end of production, Vacheron upgraded the problematic slide-lock clasp to a true butterfly clasp, creating a much improved wearing experience.

The reference 42050 offered here comes in the most desirable configuration for the mid size case, featuring both the salmon dial and the upgraded butterfly clasp. Unlike many examples that come to market, the dial of this one remains well preserved and free of major deterioration, complete with the original tritium hands. What’s more, the watch was just fully serviced by WatchCheck, ensuring accurate timekeeping and worry-free wear for the next owner. With early Overseas references still trading at a fraction of their Holy Trinity peers, pieces such as this continue to represent one of the strongest value propositions in the neo-vintage market.

:
Case may have a few moderate scratches or nicks. Lugs are thick and full but may have softened edges. Dial and hands may have light stains or marks. Lume may have cracks or discoloration.

Case: The stainless steel case shows normal wear in the form of a few hairlines, small scuffs, and tiny nicks. The case angles remain well-defined, with crisp chamfers and clean edges. The caseback is well preserved with only a few light marks and no notable imperfections. The model and serial number engravings remain sharp and legible.

Dial, Hands, & Crystal: The salmon dial and polished hands are in fantastic condition with a couple micro signs of patina present, but no major imperfections. The tritium plots across the dial and hands remain intact and have aged consistently. When exposed to UV light, the tritium briefly glows and fades away. The sapphire crystal is squeaky clean and scratch-free.

Bracelet/Strap: The Vacheron Constantin bracelet is in good overall condition with little-to-no stretch present. There are hairlines and small scuffs throughout. The clasp was replaced with the upgraded OEM butterfly model at service and retains its stickers. The Maltese Cross engraving is crisp and detailed.
