2010s Credor Signo U.T.D.

Named after the French phrase Crêt d'Or, meaning "peak of gold," Credor was established in 1974 to serve as the ultimate showcase for high-end Japanese horology. Operating under the Seiko umbrella, the brand executes hand-finished creations with a focus on precious metals and low-volume production that is more akin to independent watchmaking than commercial manufacturing. Celebrated for pushing artistic boundaries, Credor’s catalog spans ultra-thin mechanical movements, Spring Drive calibers, and decorative techniques ranging from painted porcelain to intricate skeletonization.

Credor’s pursuit of ultra thin watchmaking reached an important milestone in 1993 with the launch of the handwound caliber 6870. Based on Seiko’s longstanding 68 family of tonneau-shaped ultra thin movements, the new caliber was redesigned with better finishing specifically for Credor watches. While primarily used in limited edition models during its early years, the 6870 found a more permanent home in the mid 2000s with the introduction of the U.T.D. (Ultra Thin Dress) GBAQ series. As the name suggests, this line of watches offered collectors a pure interpretation of the traditional dress watch aesthetic, coming in both round and rectangular cases with simple two-hand displays and subtle dial textures.

The reference GBAQ976 offered here features a round yellow gold case and a stunning white guilloché dial reminiscent of a delicate spider web. The thin sword hands and faceted hour markers create additional depth, catching light from every angle and proving that a simple design can still be dynamic. On the reverse, an exhibition caseback reveals the meticulous finishing of the 6870 movement, complete with perlage on the mainplate and “Tokyo stripes” on the bridges. At 34mm in diameter and under 6mm thick, the perfectly balanced GBAQ976 hits all the right notes while offering a compelling entry point into the very best of Japanese watchmaking.
