2017 Tudor Prince Date
A Prince Date with a gorgeous silver dial, a jubilee style bracelet, and the ETA 2824-2 automatic movement.
Overview
In the late 1920s, Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf envisioned a watch line that could offer the build quality and mechanical reliability of a Rolex, but at a more accessible price point. Thus, Tudor was born, and in 1932 the brand released its first series of rectangular watches for the Australian market. By 1952, Wilsdorf introduced the "Prince" series—Tudor's equivalent to the Oyster Perpetual—signaling the full arrival of Rolex’s technologies to the younger sibling. For decades, the Prince line served as a foundational pillar for Tudor, allowing buyers an opportunity to own everyday sports watches akin to the Submariner, Datejust, and Day-Date.
The reference 74000N arrived in the 1980s as an evolution of the reference 7996 Oysterdate, which was essentially a smooth-bezel Datejust in a 34mm case. Tudor experimented heavily with the 74000N throughout its production run, as the tried-and-true Oyster silhouette proved easily adaptable to any aesthetic. Dial configurations spanned from traditional stick indices and linen finishes to Roman numerals and Mercedes handsets. Bracelet pairings were equally varied, evolving from sporty three-link Oysters to dressier Jubilees.
Among these variations, the silver dial with stick indices stands out as the most classic configuration of the reference. Its clean lines and neutral tones offer a minimalist aesthetic that lets the geometry of the case and bracelet shine. Under the light, the sunburst dial adds dynamic depth, shifting from a crisp metallic sheen to a warm champagne hue. This understated elegance makes the watch incredibly versatile, allowing it to pair seamlessly with the sporty steel bracelet or a formal leather strap. While the more eccentric variations of the 74000N catch the eye, this timeless version remains a sleeper hit for collectors seeking a true daily driver.
