Overview

Since 1932, Omega has served as the official timekeeper for the Olympic Games. As a result, the brand will often release specialty watches to honor each successive Olympiad. During the summer of 2018, in advance of the 2020 games in Tokyo, Omega unveiled five limited edition Speedmasters—one for each color in the Olympic flag. These watches were sold only within the Japanese Domestic Market, and could be purchased individually (2,020 pieces each) or as a full set (55 sets).

Each of the Speedmasters came fitted with a sapphire crystal, the Omega caliber 1861 movement, a solid caseback stamped with the Tokyo 2020 logo, and a specially configured bracelet paired with a micro-adjustment push button clasp. While the black ring edition has become the star of the series, with its panda dial reminiscent of the Mitsukoshi and Apollo XI 35th anniversary watches, the red ring edition has also generated a fair amount of interest given its striking and unprecedented design.

Affectionately dubbed the "Rising Sun”, this particular iteration features a grained silver dial surrounded by a red tachymeter bezel that echoes the hue of the Japanese flag. Few Speedmasters have employed such a unique design where the traditional black-on-black scheme is completely inverted and embellished with a tasteful pop of color. The result is a truly special variant that perfectly encapsulates the host country and the significant occasion for which it was produced.
