2023 Zenith Chronomaster Revival Shadow
A Chronomaster with a fantastic black dial, a darkened titanium case, and the El Primero 4061 automatic movement.
Overview
In 1969, Zenith entered the race to develop the world’s first automatic chronograph with the "El Primero," a sophisticated high-beat, column-wheel movement capable of measuring 1/10th of a second. The El Primero’s future, however, was quickly jeopardized in 1971 when new ownership took over and pivoted to quartz technology, eventually ordering the removal of all mechanical watchmaking tools by 1975. Yet it was the defiance of senior engineer Charles Vermot that saved the legendary caliber. Vermot secretly hid the necessary machinery and technical drawings in the factory attic. This act of preservation allowed Zenith, back under Swiss ownership in the 1980s, to secure a contract supplying movements for the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, permanently cementing the El Primero as the definitive anchor of the brand's identity.
In 2020, as part of the brand’s Revival series aimed at recreating the first El Primero models, Zenith released a distinctive version of the A384 based on a unique 1970s prototype that never made it into production. The model was a black PVD chronograph equipped with a hand-wound caliber that Zenith initially planned to release shortly after the launch of its El Primero movement in 1969. While the exact reasons behind its abandonment remain unknown, the emergence of a few prototypes in recent years inspired Zenith to reimagine a contemporary version of the watch.
The resulting Chronomaster Revival Shadow is an amalgamation of old and new, taking the brand’s classic A384 case and rendering it in a modern micro-blasted titanium that achieves a darkened effect similar to a PVD coating. Subtle details such as the exclusion of seconds markers, the removal of the 4:30 date window, and tone-on-tone registers allow for a clean, expansive dial reminiscent of Jack Heuer’s early Carreras. Completing the full “stealth mode” look is a highly durable anthracite textile strap that’s up for any task. For chronograph lovers, especially those who are monochromatically inclined, there’s no other El Primero on the market quite like this one.
