2024 Habring² Erwin Pilot
An Erwin Pilot with a phenomenal black dial, a satin brushed case, and the Habring² A11MS hand-wound movement.
Overview
Founded in 2004 by husband-and-wife duo Richard and Maria Habring, Austria-based Habring² has carved out a distinct niche as a low-volume independent manufacture. Before establishing the brand in Völkermarkt, Richard Habring made a name for himself at IWC, where he developed the ingenious split-seconds chronograph module under the mentorship of Günter Blümlein. Operating outside the geographical and corporate confines of Swiss watchmaking, Habring² focuses on modular engineering and technical transparency, producing only a few hundred watches per year and relying on a specialized network of suppliers to maintain a collector-focused ethos.
The Erwin model lineup was released in 2016 as an evolution of the brand’s flagship Felix model. Housed in a restrained 38.5mm stainless steel case with a thickness of just 9mm, the Erwin’s defining characteristic is its dead-beat seconds complication—meaning the central seconds hand ticks precisely once per second like a quartz watch, a paradoxically difficult mechanical feat. This is driven by the manual-wind caliber A11MS, a proprietary movement developed in-house to replace the ETA/Valjoux bases the brand previously relied upon. Habring² has offered the Erwin in several variations, ranging from a Scientific dial with decimal scales to classic silver and blue finishes, showcasing the platform's versatility.
The Pilot variation takes this technical base and frames it within a stark, military-inspired aesthetic. Featuring a textured black dial, white Arabic numerals, and cathedral-style hands, it swaps the standard Erwin's dress identity for high-contrast utility that balances vintage field watch DNA with the contemporary engineering of the A11MS movement beneath. The visual tension between its rugged appearance and the hyper-precise, dead-beat jumping mechanism is what makes this watch truly special. For collectors seeking an alternative to common modern aviator watches, the Erwin Pilot offers a unique wearing experience that rewards close inspection.
